MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT: ENRICHMENT AND EXTENSION

Individual Maths Challenges

Nationally the maths challenges are run by the UKMT.
Senior Maths Challenge for the sixth form and some selected younger pupils in the November, Intermediate Maths Challenge for years 9 to 11 in early February and Junior Maths Challenge for years 7 and 8 in early May. Pupils who do exceptionally well in these events get invited to take part in Olympiads later in the terms. Also for the Intermediate Maths Challenge for those who do well there is the European Kangaroo.

Olympiad Maths club is open to those who have qualified to take part in the national Olympiads.


Hans Woyda Maths Team

Hans Woyda is an inter-school maths competition which test speed as well as accuracy in solving maths problems. Each team comprises members from years 13, 12, 11 and 9. In recent year’s Wilson’s have been successful in this event, wining the local 4 school zone and progressing to the quarter finals. We have beaten teams from Whitgift, Caterham, Hampton, Kingston Grammar, Tiffin Girls and St Paul’s School (their first defeat for 5 years).


UKMT Senior Team Maths Challenge

In the UKMT senior team maths challenge teams of 4 students (2 upper sixth and 2 lower sixth) tackle maths challenge problems. This includes a group round, a cross number and a relay round. In 2008/9 Wilson’s won the regional final, ahead of St Paul’s School, and came third in the national finals. In 2009/10 we came second in the Regional final.


Surrey Schools Maths Challenge

This event is held each year at Surrey University. It provides the opportunity for a group of 5 lower sixth to work together to solve maths problems. In 2010 Wilson’s came second.


UKMT Team Maths Challenge

First there is an Inter-house event. Each team is made up from two year 9 and two year 8 from the same house. They work together on challenging problems.
This is followed by selection of the school team to compete against other school in the regional final held in Croydon in March. This includes a group round, a cross number and a relay round. Regional winners go on to the national final held in June in London. In 2007 Wilson’s came 4th in the country and in 2008 Wilson’s came 5th.


Edge Hill Team Maths Challenge

In the Edge Hill Challenge year 9 pupils work in groups to solve a problem and then to present their results as a poster in an interesting manner. The best posters are submitted to the national competition.


Year 7 Online Maths Challenge

During the spring and summer terms Junior Maths Challenge questions are posted weekly on to the school’s Virtual Learning Environment. Students tackle these multiple choice questions and their scores are then combined for an inter-house event.


Jaguar Maths Challenge

Each spring term Wilson’s runs the Jaguar Cars ‘Maths in motion’ study where pupils working in teams develop race tracks and cars.
